New Year, New Home Resolutions Checklist for 2016

New year 2016

Most people have a long list of New Year’s resolutions – get to the gym, travel, eat better – but they often forget to include home resolutions. Yes, your home needs more attention, especially since it’s still winter.

If your home is still stuck in 2015, consider resolving to make it better, brighter, and safer this year. Use this checklist to get started today, with steps to help you get your home in tip-top shape in 2016. We’ll help you make safety and design changes to your abode, so you can check a few things off your resolutions list – but you’re on your own with getting a gym membership or putting your passport to use.

Your new year’s home resolutions checklist

This checklist will help you stick to your organization resolutions. For a more detailed guide to common house problems, see Energy Star’s very helpful article for home resolutions this 2016.

Below are commonly overlooked things your home needs as well as trends that’ll give your home a new look:

Are there any water leaks?

Water leaks can lead to mold, mildew, or musty odors. When very severe, they can really damage the structure of your house and cause several health issues for your family. Leaks in your roof, attic, bathroom, etc. need to be checked and fixed as soon as possible.

Take action:

There are many cement-based mixtures that can help you seal any leaks in your home. But sometimes leaks are just too hard to handle. If you can’t fix them yourself, consider hiring a contractor or plumber (depending where the leak is) as soon as possible.

Do you see any peeling/cracking paint on your walls?

A humidity problem can cause paint to peel/crack, and lead to damp basements, molds, mildew, or musty odors. Basically, since you’re most likely done with checking for water leaks, you need to check if moisture is being absorbed through the back of any wood siding and passing through to the surface under the paint.

Take action:

It’s important to control humidity, and you can do this by air sealing (home sealing) to prevent moist air from coming in. If you need to reapply paint, don’t forget to apply primer to the surface before painting. If all else fails, contact a contractor to help you control humidity.

Have you checked your home for safety?

It’s recommended that homeowners check their homes for safety with the start of every new year (though more frequent safety inspections are preferable). Here are a few things to check for to make sure you and your family stay safe.

Take action:

  • Test all smoke detectors to see if they are properly functioning
  • Carbon monoxide detectors on each floor should also be tested
  • Contact a heating and cooling specialist to inspect your system
  • Inspect your fire extinguishers and make sure they are easily accessible

Check to make sure all locks and deadbolts on your doors and windows are secure.

Make sure that no unauthorized access will be possible by double-checking all locks and deadbolts on your doors and windows.

Take action:

  • See if all the locks and deadbolts are properly installed and secure
  • Check for any wear and tear on all locks and deadbolts
  • Install new locks and deadbolts or replace old ones if necessary

Is there too much stuff in your home?

It’s a new year, and your home should get a completely fresh start for 2016. It’s time to do a little (or a lot of) reorganizing, moving, and disposing. Consider storage solutions that will reduce the amount of clutter in your home, and help you create a neat, tidy, and seemingly more spacious living space.

Take action:

It’s helpful to walk around you home and carry a notepad with you. Simply list the things that you don’t use that much or things that you can dispose of. Once you’ve finished your list, sit down and review all the things that you’ve listed. After all, you don’t want to regret disposing of important things.
