Should You Vacation During Your Renovation

Are you wondering how to keep your cool during your home renovation? According to The Boston Globe the answer may be to time your vacation with your renovation – dare we say, you should take a “renocation?” With smartphones, video chat, and a million other ways to stay connected, homeowners are planning their home improvement projects with school breaks in mind, thereby keeping their children safe while walls are coming down and returning to completed projects. The article notes that technology and pre-planning go a long way when it comes to leaving your renovation in the hands of your hired professional while on vacation, but trust still trumps all. ““Trust is really the key to the whole thing when you’re working in this way,” Jim Miller told the Boston Globe, after managing his kitchen renovation while on vacation in Florida.

For inspiration for your renovation or maybe a new home altogether there are several celebrity abodes making real estate headlines. According to The Oregonian Sarah Palin’s Arizona mansion is up for grabs with a price tag of just under $2.5 million. If you’re not looking to pony up that kind of cash or move to Arizona take some renovation inspiration from the beautiful photos included in the Keller Williams listing.

Or perhaps your style leans more toward the sprawling Beverly Hills estate that Charlton Heston lived in until his death in 2008. You can pick up this piece of Hollywood history for $12.249 million, or check out the photos in the Realtor.com listing and bring a little of its flavor into your home.

Moving from renovation escapes and celebrity real estate to home design, it’s almost time for the beloved home design tradeshow Maison&Objet. Kukuners had a great time there in 2015, and the tidbits we’ve seen about the 2016 show promise that Paris will once again be filled to the brim with lustworthy objects for the home. The show takes place Jan. 22-26, and vintageindustrialstyle.com has a preview of some of the offerings from attending vendors (including Gong by Jo Plismy and Po! Paris). Take a look and start making a wishlist of unique items that will make your neighbors green with envy.

Speaking of unique home goods, if you haven’t heard of Chicago-based woodworker and sculptor Greta de Parry, and you’re a fan of 100 percent U.S.-made, modern furniture pieces, you’ll want to know about her. She was featured in a series on the Discovery Channel and recently took home Dwell’s 2015 On Design award for Best Furniture. Her work is billed as “contemporary furniture for the not-so-vanilla home.”
