Architect: Koen Olthuis, Waterstudio
Location: Westland, Holland, the Netherlands
Villa New Water is set in Westland, a municipality in South Holland, the Netherlands. While the house’s official name may have to do with Architect and Water Studio founder Koen Olthuis’ ideas of living “with the water” and environment, the house’s sleek design, open spaces, and futuristic vibe have earned it the nickname “UFO House.”
Westland is an area known for its greenhouses, and Olthuis “set out to design a subtle villa that would allow for the optimal experience of its surroundings.” Since this project came with strict regulations on how much of the house could be above ground, Water Studio created a sort of basement area, paying close attention to the amount of light that could reach the space.
The resulting design is a structure shaped similar to a boomerang, and built mainly of Corian, a white, durable plastic. Large floor-to-ceiling windows provide an open and airy feel to the space, uniting an unobstructed view with the soothing interior, and making the structure seem rather transparent. Olthuis also designed the garden area, which incorporates the water of the area. Few doors can be found in this house, which creates an open, continuous feel.
Calming neutrals decorate the interior of the home, combining glossy, white cabinetry in the kitchen with cream-colored flooring. Gray quilting and a smooth, white countertop complement the multi-functional island in the kitchen.
A living room sits right off the kitchen, and mimics the gray, quilted design of the kitchen island, creating a modern, inviting area and providing a sense of continuity to the home. This living space is topped off with a unique, icicle-like light fixture.
Interior designer Stephen Versteegh crafted the exquisite “wellness spa” bathroom, where symmetrical glass rooms sit on either side of a contemporary, soft-white tub. The transparent nature of the sauna and the toilet area enhance the exposed beauty of the architectural design. Neutral décor and eastern accents enrich the peaceful environment. This spa area is located in the basement of the home.
The exterior of the residence would seem a bit alien in a typical suburban neighborhood. The dwelling sits comfortably alone, observing the world around it.
