When it comes to remodeling your home, it pays to get creative – quite literally. If turning in your old, much loved water heater for a new, better performing one is on the agenda, don’t skip straight to the thought of throwing it to the curb for some local wildlife to make a new home of. You might be surprised at the multitude of possibilities something seemingly worthless could provide. In fact, your water heater could be junked, recycled, or repurposed.

Budget Blues?

Your old water heater may not exactly be made out of gold, but it might still be worth something. As long as some metals included are nonferrous, you will be able to turn a profit on anything you salvage. As well as this, running an advert on sites such as Craigslist might be worth the time it takes to get a response – perhaps someone is looking for a project or would like to scrap the materials themselves. If you feel slightly more virtuous, however, donating your old system to charities such as Goodwill could save you some time – the only stipulation is that your heating unit will still need to be in good working order for you to be able to do this. Alternatively, arranging for a pickup of the old system could stop you worrying about finding ways to transport it yourself if you don’t have a car.

Get Creative

How many of us have been trolling through our newsfeed, watching someone make a fairy garden out of broken terra cotta plant pots, and imagined ourselves as domestic creative geniuses? Well, this could be a chance to let your creativity shine. If the tank is not leaking and in relatively good shape, but you are acutely aware of your carbon footprint, converting your old system into a solar powered water heater could be the perfect option for you.

Alternatively, think about converting the old system into something exciting such as a brand new grill or smoker for your family to enjoy or even as a planter in your garden.
