Can you spray paint PVC pipe?

Totally and absolutely, it is one of the most practical ways to paint PVC pipe. The spray, however, must be painted methodically to achieve a uniform surface.

A natural problem with PVC is that because of its molecular composition, which prevents most liquids from adhering to its surface, paint on PVC with other types of paints like latex-based paint has always been prone to flaking, bubbling, or rubbing off. Many people use Krylon fusion paints for plastic pipes.

Here is how to do it, remember that although some paints for plastics do not require special preparation beforehand, we advise you to follow the steps below to get the best possible results.

You will need the following tools and materials:

  • 220 grit sandpaper
  • Acetone
  • Plastic gloves
  • Old or work clothes
  • Plastic spray paint

Step 1: Check the weather and save a day’s work

All paintwork should be done on sunny, low-humidity days, ideally between 45-90 degrees Fahrenheit or 30 degrees Celsius. Choose a well-ventilated, air-circulated work site to work in, especially since acetone is extremely flammable, it should be used away from heat sources.

Step 2: Sand the pipe

With 220 grit sandpaper gently rub the pipe, and sand in all directions to avoid straight ridges that form grooved surfaces. Do not power sand or you risk weakening the line.

Step 3: Clean the pipe

Using rubber gloves and a rag dampened with acetone, clean the surface and allow it to dry for 20 to 30 minutes. The acetone will remove all sanding dust and make the pipe more porous to receive the first coat of paint.

Step 4: Splash protection

When spray painting, overspray, and splatter stains are generated, cover the area with plastic sheeting, tape, cloths, or newspapers to protect the area and furniture if present.

Step 5: Apply spray paint

Shake the spray paint well for 15-20 seconds, with a sweeping motion apply the color over the surface from side to side, bottom to top, and down to the bottom. Paint the PVC in thin, even coats, overlapping the paint as you go down the pipe to avoid drips.

Step 6: Apply the second coat

Allow the first coat to dry for at least 30 minutes, then apply the second coat. If you have to support the pipe, allow it to dry long enough to turn it over and paint the other side. Avoid overlapping paint in the areas you have already painted to achieve a uniform coat. As with all spray paint jobs, you must apply several coats in thin layers until the “true color” is achieved.

Step 7: Allow to dry for 24 hours

Allow the paint to air dry, if you are going to do a job where the new coat of paint may be scraped or nicked from the pipe during the process wait at least 1 week. Once the project is completed, keep the painted pipes clean by wiping them gently with a water-dampened rag.

As we have told you, you can. However, not with traditional paints. They must be painted specifically for PVC and plastic. Special paints for plastic adhere like a second skin.

If you use paint not specifically for plastic, such as latex or acrylic paint, you will not get a durable finish. The paint will probably stick and adhere to the plastic pipes, but it will not bond at the molecular level.

The problem with it not adhering like a skin to the pipe is that the plastic shrinks and expands as the temperature fluctuates, which causes the paint to scale and moisture to adhere, causing the paint to lift.

Generally, the paint for PVC or plastic is made with a solvent base.
