If you have a swimming pool in your home, it is essential to keep it clean. Maintaining and cleaning a pool is hard, but you need to do it if you want clean and refreshing water all the time. If you don’t clean or maintain your swimming pool regularly, the water may get hazy and even greener with time. It becomes unhygienic for swimming and invites a lot of harmful microorganisms.
It is not difficult to keep your pool clean and sparkling, to be ready to enjoy a dip in the summer season. If you take care of the below-given tips, your pool will always be sparkling clean and refreshing.
Check the Chemicals
Check the chemicals in the pool water twice a week in summer and once in a week in the winter season. The pH level if water should always be between 7.2 and 7.8. The chlorine becomes lesser active with the rising level of pH. At a 7.0 pH level, the chlorine is 50 % active while it becomes 10 percent active at 8.0 pH level. If you control the pH level of the water in your pool, you will need much less chlorine.
If the pH level of your pool water is too high, it means that the water is too alkaline and you need to add some acid to lower the pH level. You can use sodium bisulfate or muriatic acid to lower down the alkalinity of your water. If the pH level of water is too low, it means that the water is too acidic; you can lower the acidity of your water by adding some sodium carbonate to it. The chlorine level should always be between 1 to 3 parts per million.

Shock and Algaecide
In addition to maintaining the alkalinity and chlorine levels, your pool water needs a little more care to keep it sparkling clean. You need to shock or chlorinate your pool water to kill any bacteria or algae that may be growing in it. You can find the pool shock treatments at a pool supply store. Also, add some algaecide if you notice any signs of algae on the walls. The amount of shock or algaecide you need to add to the water depends on the size of your pool. You need to clean the skimmer basket at least once a week or as required. Anything that enters your pool enters from the surface. The skimmer installed at the side of your pool skims the surface from any debris before it settles down to the bottom. You need to clean the skimmer basket once in a week so that it regularly cleans your pool of the unwanted contaminants.
Clean the hair and lint pot
The hair and lint pot also need to be cleaned out every week or as required. Hair and lint pot is a basket installed in the pump of your swimming pool. Water Level
The maintenance of your pool also depends on the level of water in it. The water level in your pool should neither be too high nor too low. If the level of water in your pool is too low, the Pool pump may run dry and burn. On the other hand, too high level of water will not let the skimmer door work properly. The correct level of water in the pool helps the pool skimmer to clear the debris more effectively and prevents the pump from running dry.
Backwashing
Your pool filter also plays an important role in maintaining your pool water. It clears the dirt and debris from the pool water, but it needs regular cleaning to work properly. The cleaning of pool filter is known as backwashing in which the water is made to flow in the opposite direction to clear the filter from the debris. You should backwash your filter as soon as you notice any haziness in the pool water.
General maintenance
The general maintenance involves regular checking and cleaning of your pool water. You should create a weekly routine for pool cleaning and maintenance. For example, you should check the chemicals and their balance once a week and add the chemicals as required. Also, check the water level for the proper functioning of pump and skimmer so that your water always remains clean and clear.
In case of heavy rains, windstorms, bad odor, visible algae, haziness of water or swimmers experiencing problems like burning eyes or skin irritation, you should give an additional shock treatment.
