Keeping our homes safe and clean is always a goal for us homeowners. But when it comes to our pets, there is always a question of how you can improve your abode for your needs and theirs.
Pets are like family, and human homes must be safe to them also. It’ll take a while, but determined fur parents can take a look at these helpful tips that can make your home safer for your pets.
A thorough inspection of the house goes a long way
When it comes to making sure your home is pet-safe, the first thing on your list is to thoroughly inspect your home of items, areas, and materials that can harm or be destroyed by your pets. Even a short checking of whether your dog can ransack that crawl space is a must.
Research and try to find alternatives or solutions for these small things around your house. If you’re keeping plants, research if that plant is pet-safe. If you keep cords lying around, try to keep them in a box or organize it with ties.
If you have cabinets or drawers, you can try those cabinet locks and many more. These can be tailored to your home as long as the solutions are human-friendly too.
Pick furniture and items that are durable
Pets can be playful, and most of the time, they tend to destroy items within their reach. Another tip to ensuring a pet-safe home, free from mess and destruction, is to choose durability at all times. Pick easy to clean or stain-resistant furniture. As we all know, pets tend to make “messes” most of the time, and sofas and carpets are not safe.
When it comes to flooring, opt for tiles or stone. Not only are they scratch-proof, but also easier to clean from messes, unlike wood floors. If you love carpets, try finding a carpet that matches your pet’s fur.
Pet-proof your furniture, wirings, cabinets, and other attractive or smelly items
Our pets are adventurous little beings. They tend to poke, sniff, bite, or even pee on everyday items. They might be attracted to the smell or look of these, but it doesn’t mean they want to destroy these items. If you have furniture that can be destroyed, opt for ones that are durable and easy to clean. If your home office has a bunch of wirings, or if you use window blinds with strings, keep it tidy and organize it in boxes or cable ties.
If you have cabinets prone to opening, try sticking cabinet latches, so your pets won’t reach whatever is inside it. And lastly, does your pet like to destroy your trash? Try using trash cans with lids to reach out to it (which can also be useful for other areas such as the toilet.

Clean your home every day
Cleaning your home every day is a foolproof way of making sure your home is in tip-top shape when your pet is around. Not only is it pleasing to the eye, but it also helps in the well-being of your pets. A clean and healthy home is free from dirt, dust, bugs, ants, and other critters that can show up (especially when your pets just finished doing their toilet.) These can be avoided with routine cleanings such as vacuuming and a little troubleshooting.
One of your concerns as pet owners is the cleaning agents we use at home. Not all chemicals are safe for your pets, including sprays, detergents, etc. Ants can be a focal problem through food bowls. Finding ways to get rid of ants without harming your pet can be daunting. But just research and ask other pet owners, and you’ll be critter-free in no time.

Find an area just for your pet
Your home is their home too. Giving your pet their own pet space can help you organize your pet’s items and give them the space they need. Your pets have feelings, too, and giving them a safe space to do whatever they want lessens their hyperactivity inside the house.
Their space can be under the staircase, their own crawl space complete with a bed, a crate, toys, pillows, etc. It could be anything. It doesn’t matter if it’s grand or simple, as long as it has everything your dog needs to feel safe and secure.

Your pet, your home
Your home is an extension of who you are. It doesn’t matter how many pet toys you have or if your pet has its own mini-mansion in your backyard. It all just boils down to how much you’re willing to do for your pet. I’m not talking about money. I’m talking about making an effort to make your pet feel they’re very best with you. Your pet won’t care if they have a custom-sized bed or if they’re surrounded by the best things money can buy. The best thing you can do for them as a fur parent is to make sure that your home is their home.
